Rewind to March 2020. While the “inaugural” ACTS Africa Team crossed the Atlantic and made our way to Nairobi, Covid 19 mushroomed across Europe and the United States. Two conferences were scheduled, but we completed only the first near the Tanzania border. We were fortunate to catch flights back to the USA before Kenya closed and international flights were abruptly discontinued.

Njukini Steering Team

ACTS Africa made a promise to our friends in Taveta and Njukini on the Tanzania border that we’d return to keep that commitment. That trip was scheduled February 14-25, 2021. Jared Herzog from the Florida Panhandle and Dave Pittman from North Central Arkansas (both former featured contestants on The Voice and American Idol, respectively) and John Rushing planned, packed, and showed up at IAH Airport in Houston to fulfill that promise. Our part just wasn’t meant to be. Houston experienced its most damaging ice storm and sub-freezing temperatures in nearly 70 years beginning the evening of our departure and all flights canceled after we’d already boarded our Turkish Airlines jet. We never left the ground. Flights were canceled for days. For the second time ACTS Africa had to tell them, “We’re not coming.” But there’s more to the story. Lots more.

ACTS Africa’s East Africa Director, Pastor Samson Otieno rose to the occasion and led both Power of Change conferences with nearly 1,500 attending. It’s been said that the “third time is a charm.” Yes, we’re going to try again in July of 2021. Both locations’ steering teams are telling us to expect over 2,000! Covid-19 is still looming large over Eastern and Southern Africa. Pray!
